There is no Uber and no Grab. The local app is Dart, the taxi meter is published with an airport surcharge, and the buses stop at eight in the evening.
Do not look for Uber or Grab
- Neither operates in Brunei. Brunei Tourism says so on its own transport page. If your usual arrival routine is opening Grab on the airport wifi, it will not work here.
- The local app is Dart. It is the Brunei equivalent, it can undercut the metered taxis, and it is on both app stores. Install it before you fly, because setting up an account on a foreign SIM at the kerb is the slow version.
The taxi meter, published
- BND 3.50 for the first kilometre or first minute.
- BND 0.20 for each subsequent 250 metres or 15 seconds.
- A BND 3.00 surcharge applies to and from Brunei International Airport.
- BND 8.00 extra for a journey from one district to another, which is most of the country outside the capital.
- Between 18:00 and 06:00, add 50 per cent of the metered fare. An evening arrival costs half as much again.
- More than two pieces of luggage or more than four passengers can attract further charges. Ask before loading the boot.
- There is a published fixed-price list from the airport to common destinations, which is worth asking for if the meter is not used.
The bus is cheap and it stops early
- Fares average about BND 1, which makes it the cheapest way into town by a distance.
- The service runs from 06:00 to 20:00. That is the whole operating day. An evening flight arrives after the last bus, so plan a taxi or a Dart for anything landing in the dark.
- Route and timing information is not published as a national timetable; Brunei Tourism points travellers at the Moovit app for that.
Once you are in the capital
- Water taxis cross to Kampong Ayer, the water village, for roughly BND 2 to 5, negotiated rather than metered.
- Car hire runs about BND 60 to 100 a day, and is the realistic way to see anything outside Bandar Seri Begawan given the bus hours.
- A foreign-registered car can only refuel at 14 designated filling stations, up to 250 litres, and only with premium fuel, usually cash. That matters if you drive in from Malaysia rather than hiring locally.
