Cape Town International Airport (CPT) to the city
MyCiTi route A01 runs to the Civic Centre, but you must buy a myconnect card before you can pay for it.
- The MyCiTi A01 runs from the airport to the Civic Centre in the city bowl, and it is the only public transport worth using here.
- You cannot pay cash. Fares load onto a myconnect card, which costs about R35 on top of your fare.
- Budget about R115 for the first journey - roughly R35 for the card plus about R80 for the fare - not the fare alone.
- Load extra credit at the same time. Topping up later is easy in the city and awkward at the airport kiosk.
- Fares were adjusted on 1 July 2026, so figures published before that are low.
The MyCiTi bus
- Route A01 links the airport to the Civic Centre station in the city bowl, which is central and connects to the rest of the MyCiTi network.
- The journey takes about 20 to 30 minutes depending on traffic.
- Buses are secure, air-conditioned and have luggage space - this is a proper airport service rather than a city bus that happens to call.
The card, and the real cost
The fare is not the price of getting into town.
- A myconnect card costs about R35, once.
- The airport fare is about R80.
- First journey total: about R115.
- The card is reusable across the whole MyCiTi network, so the R35 is a one-off - but you pay it at the kiosk before you board, and there is no cash option.
- Load more than the single fare. Around R100 of credit covers the trip with something left for a city journey.
MyCiTi fares were adjusted on 1 July 2026, which is why older figures understate them.
Other options
- Uber and Bolt both operate and are widely used by residents and visitors alike. Pick-up is from a designated zone.
- Metered taxis are available at the rank, and more expensive.
- Hire cars are popular in Cape Town because the region rewards driving - the Cape Peninsula and the Winelands are not served by public transport in any useful way.
A note on the route
The A01 passes through areas where the FCDO and other governments advise care. On the bus itself this is not a concern - it is a secure service on a main road. The advice matters if you are considering walking or waiting at intermediate stops, which you should not do with luggage.
