Harare (HRE): ten car hire firms listed, no taxi company, and an empty tariff page

The Airports Company of Zimbabwe names taxis and shuttle buses among its ground transport at Harare, then lists no taxi operator, no shuttle operator and no price. Its own Airport Tariffs page carries a list of airports and nothing else. Bolt works in Harare the city; its airport directory names no Zimbabwean airport.

  • The operator publishes no fare for anything at this airport. Its Airport Tariffs page lists the nine airports and prints no tariff at all.
  • It names taxis and shuttle buses among Harare's ground transport services, then lists neither, while listing ten car hire firms by name and number.
  • So agree the fare before you get in. There is no official figure to check a driver against, which is a real answer and not a gap.
  • Parking has several car parks around the terminal and no published price. The concession is Car Safe, on +263-242-575 633, and the operator recommends reserving for long stay.
  • Bolt lists Harare as its only Zimbabwean city. That is the one ride-hailing app in the country.
  • Bolt's own airport directory of 100+ airports names no airport in Zimbabwe, while it does name Entebbe. Do not assume a managed app pickup zone at the kerb here.
  • Uber does not operate anywhere in Zimbabwe, by its own country directory.
  • The airport is 15 km south of Harare and runs 24 hours. It is the only one of Zimbabwe's three international airports that does.
  • Car hire on site: LED Travel and Tours, Avis, Budget, Europcar, Imperial, Rockshade, EasyGo (CMED), Hertz, Elite Car Hire and Impala.
  • Established in 1956 as Salisbury Airport, with a 4,725 m runway that takes an A380, 42 check-in counters and 7 aerobridges.
  • Call centre +263 242 575662. Airport manager +263 242 575 778.

What is published, and what is not

  • The Airports Company of Zimbabwe's Harare page lists ground transport services: car rentals, taxis, and shuttle buses. Its car rental directory then names ten firms with phone numbers. Its taxi and shuttle listings do not exist.
  • Its Airport Tariffs page shows a list of the nine ACZ airports and no tariff. Not for parking, not for a shuttle, not for a taxi.
  • Its car parking page names the concession, Car Safe, on +263-242-575 633, recommends reservations for long stay, and gives no price.
  • The honest summary is that nothing about the cost of leaving this airport is published by anybody official. Agree the fare with the driver before the car moves, and treat any fixed figure quoted by a guide as invented.

Ride-hailing: one app, and it does not claim the airport

  • Bolt lists Harare as the only city it serves in Zimbabwe. There is no second brand: Uber's own country directory does not include Zimbabwe at all.
  • Bolt's own airport directory, which names more than 100 airports it serves, has no Zimbabwean entry while it does list Entebbe in Uganda. The app works in the city; the airport is not one of the airports Bolt advertises. Have a fallback for the kerb rather than opening the app as your only plan.

The airport itself

  • 15 km south of Harare, 24 hour operations, which makes it the only Zimbabwean international airport that does not close. Victoria Falls and Bulawayo both shut.
  • Established in 1956 as Salisbury Airport. Runway 4,725 m by 46 m, wide enough for an A380, 42 check-in counters, 7 aerobridges, Category 9 fire cover with two fire stations, 60 retail and service outlets and free wifi.
  • Call centre +263 242 575662, airport manager +263 242 575 778.

Harare (HRE): the one airport bureau de change in Zimbabwe, and it has a shop number

Kwikforex at Harare is the only airport bureau de change the operator lists anywhere in the country. Four banks and all three mobile networks are in the international terminal, each with a shop number, which is what makes them findable on arrival.

  • Kwikforex at Harare is the only airport bureau de change ACZ lists in Zimbabwe. Its number is +263 772 168 192.
  • Four banks are in the international passenger terminal: FBC in shop 59, CBZ in shop 51, ZB in shops 52 and 53, Post Office Bank in shop 57A.
  • All three mobile networks have shops in the same terminal: Telecel shop 6, Econet shop 63, NetOne shop 66.
  • Note the shop numbers. They are how the operator identifies these outlets, and how to ask for them.
  • Arriving at Victoria Falls instead means none of this: ACZ lists no bureau de change and no mobile operator there.
  • Free airport wifi throughout, with 60 retail and service outlets including restaurants and boutiques.
  • Jet A1 and AVGAS are available, relevant for charters onward to the parks.
  • ACZ's head office is on the 3rd level of the international terminal building, which is where complaints actually land.
  • Immigration at the airport: +263 242 575 296. ZIMRA customs: +263 242 585020 or 585027.
  • Air traffic control +263 242 575 187, flight briefing +263 242 585006, flight permits +263 242 585018.
  • Private ambulance cover is what exists here: EMRAS on +263 733 432 569 and MARS on +263 772 219 476, both published by the airport.
  • Save those two numbers before you land. They are the airport's own emergency contacts.

Money and a SIM, by shop number

  • Kwikforex at Robert Gabriel Mugabe is the only airport bureau de change the Airports Company of Zimbabwe lists in the whole country, on +263 772 168 192.
  • Banks in the international passenger terminal: FBC shop 59, CBZ shop 51, ZB shops 52 and 53, Post Office Bank shop 57A.
  • Mobile operators in the same terminal: Telecel shop 6, Econet shop 63, NetOne shop 66.
  • The shop numbers are worth carrying. At Victoria Falls the operator lists no bureau de change and no mobile operator at all, so if your itinerary starts there, buy the eSIM before you fly and change money elsewhere.

The numbers to have before you land

  • Immigration +263 242 575 296. ZIMRA customs +263 242 585020 or 585027. Call centre +263 242 575662.
  • Air traffic control +263 242 575 187, flight briefing +263 242 585006, flight permits +263 242 585018, which matter if you are arriving on a private or charter aircraft.
  • The emergency numbers the airport publishes are private ambulance services: EMRAS +263 733 432 569 and MARS +263 772 219 476. Save both.
  • ACZ's head office is on the 3rd level of the international terminal building, at the airport itself.
