Managua (MGA): there is no Uber in Nicaragua and no airport bus
Two of the assumptions travellers bring to Central America do not hold here. It is the official taxi rank or a pre-booked transfer, and neither publishes a tariff.
- Uber does not operate in Nicaragua. Whatever worked for you in Costa Rica or Panama does not work here.
- There is no direct public bus from the airport to the city centre.
- That leaves the official airport taxi rank just outside arrivals, or a transfer booked in advance through your hotel or an operator.
- Neither the airport nor the taxi cooperative publishes a tariff, so ask at the desk before you leave the building rather than at the kerb.
- One guide puts an official taxi to central Managua at USD 20 to 30 and a pre-booked private transfer at USD 20 to 40.
- The airport is about 11 km east of central Managua, 20 to 30 minutes.
- Granada is 50 to 60 minutes, León about 90, San Juan del Sur 2.5 to 3 hours. Many visitors never go into Managua at all.
- Immigration can take 20 to 45 minutes when several international flights land close together.
- One terminal serves everything, with duty free, cafés and restaurants.
- The area around the airport is not somewhere to walk, particularly at night. Use authorised transport only.
Two assumptions to drop
- Uber does not operate in Nicaragua. This is the single most useful fact on this page, because a great deal of Central America travel advice assumes it does.
- There is no direct public bus from the airport. Managua's bus network exists but it does not serve the terminal in a way a visitor can use on arrival.
So what is left
- The official taxi rank is just outside the arrivals terminal.
- A pre-booked private transfer through a hotel or an operator is the alternative and the better one for a night arrival.
- Neither the airport nor the taxi cooperative publishes a tariff. The honest answer to "how much" is to ask at the desk inside the terminal, before you are standing outside with your bags.
- One guide's figures: about USD 20 to 30 for an official taxi to central Managua, USD 20 to 40 for a pre-booked private transfer. Treat those as indicative rather than a published rate.

- A lot of visitors never set foot in Managua. Granada and León are the destinations, and both are a straightforward transfer from the airport.
- Book the long transfers in advance. Turning up at the rank and asking for San Juan del Sur is a negotiation you will lose.
Arriving
- Immigration takes 20 to 45 minutes when flights bunch, which they do, because the international schedule clusters.
- One terminal handles everything. Duty free, cafés and restaurants, both local and international food.
- The terminal itself is safe and staffed with security. The surrounding area is not a place to walk around, especially after dark, so arrange the ride and take it.
