Carrasco (MVD) to Montevideo and Punta del Este
COPSA, COT, CUTCSA and Turismar all call here, and Tres Cruces is where you change for the rest of the country. The taxi has a glass screen that hurts people.
- The airport lists four bus operators and disclaims all of them: COPSA, COT, CUTCSA and Turismar.
- CUTCSA is the Montevideo city network, with over a thousand buses.
- COPSA runs the Maldonado and Canelones corridor, which is the way to Punta del Este.
- COT runs the intercity coaches with air conditioning, a toilet and Wi-Fi.
- Tres Cruces is the interchange for anywhere else in Uruguay.
- Montevideo taxis have a thick glass partition and passengers are injured against it in minor crashes.
Four companies, and none of them is the airport's
- Carrasco states plainly that the interdepartmental and urban services at the airport are run by companies not affiliated with it. That is unusually honest signage and it tells you where to complain, which is not the airport.
- COPSA operates 297 buses linking Montevideo with Maldonado and Canelones - the Punta del Este corridor.
- COT runs 90 coaches with air conditioning, a toilet, audio and Wi-Fi, connecting Montevideo to the main cities.
- CUTCSA runs 1,090 buses across Montevideo and its metropolitan area.
- Turismar runs transfers and tourism services.
Tres Cruces
- Tres Cruces is Montevideo's bus terminal, and it is where an airport service becomes a bus to anywhere else in the country.
- It is a shopping centre as well as a terminal, which makes it a usable place to wait.
The taxi and its screen
- Montevideo taxis carry a thick glass partition between driver and passenger, installed to protect the driver.
- Passengers are thrown against it when the driver brakes hard, and Global Affairs Canada warns that the injuries can be severe even in a minor collision.
- Sit back and belt up, and do not lean forward to talk.
Ride-hailing
- Ride-hailing apps operate in Montevideo and are regulated to standards equivalent to taxis.
- Check the driver and the plate before getting in.
The geography
- The airport is on Ruta 101, about 20 km east of the centre, beyond the Carrasco neighbourhood.
- Punta del Este is about two hours east by road, which is a separate journey rather than a suburb.
One thing to do before you leave the terminal
- The Tax Free regime on goods is claimed on the way out, at Carrasco, so keep the paperwork from any shop that offered it.
