Nassau (NAS): the fares are fixed by zone, and they are for two people

The airport publishes a full taxi tariff. Every quoted fare covers two passengers and two bags each, and there is no bus, because public buses are not allowed on the airport.

  • Taxi fares are set by zone and published by the airport. Downtown is USD 36.00, Cable Beach USD 29.00, Paradise Island USD 45.00 plus a USD 2.00 bridge toll.
  • Every fare is for two passengers. Each additional passenger is USD 5.00.
  • Two bags per person are included, meaning a suitcase and a carry-on. Extra pieces are USD 2.20 each and oversized or golf bags USD 3.30.
  • Children under three travel free.
  • Taxis wait outside the US, International and Domestic terminals.
  • Public buses are not permitted to operate at the airport. The jitneys that serve the island do not come here.
  • The airport is about 16 km, ten miles, west of downtown Nassau.
  • Avis, Hertz, Budget, Dollar and Thrifty all have desks, and Atlantis, Baha Mar and Sandals Royal Bahamian run their own transport desks in arrivals.
  • Security opens at 6am and closes at 10pm in the domestic and international terminals.
  • There is a US Customs and Border Protection preclearance hall, so a flight to the States is a domestic arrival at the other end.

The published tariff

  • This is one of the clearest airport taxi tariffs anywhere, printed by the airport itself by zone.

  • Luggage beyond one suitcase and one carry-on per person is USD 2.20 a piece, and a golf bag, a box or anything oversized is USD 3.30.
  • The Bahamas Taxi Cab Union is on 242-323-5818 if a fare does not match the published one.

Everything else at the kerb

  • Public buses cannot operate at the airport. That is an airport rule, so the cheap jitney network is not an option for the airport run.
  • Rental desks on site: Avis, Hertz, Budget, Dollar and Thrifty.
  • Three resorts have their own transport desks in the arrivals terminal: Atlantis, Baha Mar and Sandals Royal Bahamian. If you are staying at one, that is the simplest route.
  • Rideshare and private shuttles both operate.

Times

  • Security opens at 6am and closes at 10pm in the domestic and international terminals. In the US departures terminal, security and US Customs both open at 6am.
  • The airport asks for 3 hours before an international flight and 2 before a domestic one. The three hours is not padding; it is the preclearance queue.
  • Free wifi throughout, on LPIA Free WiFi, after a short form.
  • ATMs are in domestic check-in, the domestic and international departure lounge, the arrivals terminal, and upstairs in the US departure lounge.

Flying to the United States

  • LPIA has a US Customs and Border Protection preclearance facility. You clear US immigration and customs here, before boarding, and land in the States as a domestic passenger.
  • TSA PreCheck, Mobile Passport Control, Global Entry and Automated Passport Control kiosks are all available. Download the Mobile Passport Control app before you get to the airport if you qualify.
  • Do the Global Entry interview here if you need one. US Customs agents at the booth conduct them.

Arriving

  • Bahamas Immigration first, then baggage, then Bahamas Customs, and the airport describes it as exactly that simple.
  • An oral declaration covers used personal belongings; anything else needs a C17 baggage declaration in the Exempt app, and a visitor's duty free exemption is only USD 100.00.
