Arrange the transfer before you arrive

• This is what residents and business travellers do, and it is the advice every embassy gives.
• Most hotels in Port Moresby run airport transfers and will meet you inside.
• Confirm it when you book, and confirm again a day before.

The taxi rank

• Jacksons posts set rates at the rank, which is genuinely unusual in Papua New Guinea and means the fare is not a negotiation there.
• Use the rank rather than any offer made to you.
• Do not wait on the road outside the airport perimeter.

Safety

Port Moresby has a serious reputation and it is worth being straightforward about it.

• Take local advice on where to go and when. Your hotel will tell you, and you should ask.
• Do not walk after dark, and be cautious about walking at all in some areas.
• Do not use PMVs (public motor vehicles) as a visitor with luggage.
• This is not a reason to avoid PNG, which is an extraordinary country - it is a reason to arrive with the transfer already arranged.

Domestic flying

• PNG's road network does not connect most of the country. Getting to Mount Hagen, Rabaul, Madang or the islands means flying.
• Jacksons is the hub for all of it, with domestic and international terminals adjacent.
• Book domestic flights well ahead. Capacity is limited, cancellations happen, and alternatives on the ground usually do not exist.
• Allow slack in any itinerary that depends on a domestic connection.
