Windhoek (WDH): no bus and no tariff, but the app publishes the formula so you can cost the 45 km

Hosea Kutako is 45 km east of Windhoek and no municipal route goes there. No authority publishes a fare. LEFA, the app that says it serves the airport, publishes N$4.00 a kilometre plus N$3.50 a minute, which puts the 45 km at roughly N$320 and brackets the shuttle prices.

  • The airport is 45 km east of Windhoek, over the Khomas Mountains. That is the operator's own figure, and it is a drive, not a hop.
  • The City of Windhoek's bus timetable has no route to the airport. The municipal network runs between suburbs and the city centre.
  • No airport, city or transport authority publishes a fare for the journey. Everything below is an operator's own price.
  • LEFA says it operates in Windhoek, at Hosea Kutako and at lodges and game farms nearby. It is the app that claims the airport.
  • LEFA charges per trip, not per person: minimum N$40, then N$4.00 per kilometre plus N$3.50 per minute, with no fixed fares and no surge.
  • Do the arithmetic before you land: 45 km at N$4.00 is N$180, and at N$3.50 a minute a 40 minute run adds N$140, so about N$320, more if the traffic is bad.
  • LEFA warns that pre-booked fares are not the same as app fares. Book in the app if you want the metered rate.
  • Tok Tokkie Shuttle Services charges N$250 per seat shared, and from N$350 exclusive.
  • Its shared runs leave about one hour after arrivals and 2 to 3 hours before an outbound flight, with payment and confirmation due by 17:00 the day before.
  • So the honest bracket for one person is roughly N$250 to N$350, and that is operator pricing, not a regulated tariff.
  • Yango lists Windhoek, Walvis Bay and Swakopmund, but says nothing about serving the airport.
  • Uber and Bolt list no Namibian city at all. Neither app exists here.
  • The airport's own passenger information names no operator: it says to ask at the information desk or the loadmasters.

Forty-five kilometres, and nothing public goes there

  • Hosea Kutako International Airport is 45 km east of Windhoek, over the Khomas Mountains, by the Namibia Airports Company's own description. Plan a drive of roughly three quarters of an hour.
  • The City of Windhoek publishes a municipal bus timetable and not one route serves the airport. The network connects suburbs such as Katutura, Otjomuise and Prosperita with the centre.
  • The airport's passenger information page lists registered shuttle and taxi operators without naming any of them, and tells arriving passengers to ask at the information desk or the loadmasters. That is the whole of the official guidance.

Costing it yourself, from the app's published rate

  • LEFA is the app that says it works at Hosea Kutako, as well as in Windhoek and at the lodges and game farms around it.
  • Its published rate is unusually explicit: fares are charged per trip and not per person, with a minimum of N$40, calculated at N$4.00 per kilometre plus N$3.50 per minute. No fixed fares, no surge pricing.
  • That makes the ride costable in advance. The distance component of 45 km is N$180. The time component at N$3.50 a minute is N$140 for a 40 minute run, more in traffic. Call it about N$320, and expect a slow run to push it higher.
  • Pre-booked LEFA fares are not the same as app fares, which the operator states plainly. If you want the metered price, order in the app when you land rather than booking ahead through the form.

The shuttle, and what the bracket really is

  • Tok Tokkie Shuttle Services publishes N$250 per seat for a shared Windhoek transfer and from N$350 for an exclusive ride. Shared departures leave about one hour after arrivals, and 2 to 3 hours before an outbound flight. Full payment and confirmation are required by 17:00 the day before.
  • Put together: one seat into Windhoek costs roughly N$250 to N$350 depending on whether you share, and an app ride sits around the top of that. None of it is a regulated fare, because there is no regulated fare.
  • Yango covers Windhoek, Walvis Bay and Swakopmund, but makes no claim about the airport. Uber and Bolt do not operate in Namibia at all. So the realistic options are LEFA, a booked shuttle, or the hire car you collect in the terminal.

Windhoek (WDH): your safari flight probably leaves from the other airport

Eros Airport, five kilometres from the city centre, is where the charters and fly-in safaris go. It is a different airport from Hosea Kutako, 45 km away, and the connection between them is a shuttle you have to arrange.

  • Eros Airport is 5 km from the centre of Windhoek and is where charter and fly-in safari traffic operates.
  • Hosea Kutako is 45 km the other way. Landing at one and departing from the other is 50 km of driving, not a terminal change.
  • Check which airport your onward flight uses before you book the transfer, not after.
  • Airport shuttles connect Eros to Hosea Kutako and to downtown Windhoek, which is the link the operator names.
  • Scheduled airlines at Hosea Kutako: FlyNamibia, South African Airways, Airlink, TAAG Angola, Qatar Airways and Ethiopian Airlines.
  • At Hosea Kutako you will find Cambio Seguro and Nova Cambio bureaux de change, NamPost postal and banking services, and Bank Windhoek and First National Bank ATMs.
  • Short and long-term parking, car hire and VAT refund facilities are all in the terminal.
  • A recent refurbishment covered the duty free, a restaurant, the public parking and the VAT refund desks.
  • Yellow fever vaccination is only required if you reached Namibia through a yellow fever area other than by scheduled air service.
  • A yellow fever certificate becomes valid 10 days after the injection, so it cannot be fixed on arrival.
  • Malaria is a northern and eastern issue, and the risk season is the December to April rains.
  • Eros handles high performance jets down to the Cessna 206 that flies most fly-in safaris.

Two airports, 50 km apart

  • Eros Airport sits five kilometres from Windhoek city centre. It is the base for charter and fly-in safari traffic, from executive jets to the Cessna 206 that carries most safari passengers.
  • Hosea Kutako is 45 km east of the city. If you land internationally and fly out on a safari charter, you are changing airports and crossing the city, not changing terminals.
  • The operator's own answer to the link is a shuttle: airport shuttles connect Eros to Hosea Kutako and to downtown Windhoek. Book it as part of the itinerary.
  • Check which airport the charter uses when you book it. This is the single most common way an otherwise sound Namibian itinerary loses a morning.

What is in the international terminal

  • Scheduled airlines: FlyNamibia, South African Airways, Airlink, TAAG Angola, Qatar Airways and Ethiopian Airlines, serving Johannesburg, Cape Town, Luanda, Doha, Addis Ababa and Frankfurt among others.
  • Bureaux de change: Cambio Seguro and Nova Cambio. NamPost provides postal and banking services, and there are Bank Windhoek and First National Bank ATMs.
  • Car hire, short and long-term parking and VAT refund facilities are all on site, and the duty free, a restaurant, the public parking and the VAT refund area have recently been refurbished.

Health rules that actually apply here

  • Yellow fever vaccination is required only if your journey to Namibia passed through a yellow fever area of Africa by any means other than a scheduled air service. For most arrivals by air it does not apply.
  • A yellow fever certificate is valid from 10 days after the vaccination, so it is not something the airport can solve for you.
  • Malaria is prevalent in the north and east, particularly in the December to April rains. A Windhoek trip and a Zambezi trip are not the same medical decision.
