Best first-night neighbourhoods (Sydney: CBD/The Rocks 250+ AUD, Surry Hills, Bondi Junction; Melbourne: CBD, Fitzroy, St Kilda) and strict check-in rules: physical card matching the passport, bonds of 100–500 AUD (up to 3,000 AUD/night for luxury villas), refunds in 3–10 business days.

  • Sydney CBD and The Rocks put you within walking distance of the Opera House and on the T8 airport train, from 250+ AUD a night. Surry Hills and Bondi Junction are the mid-price alternatives.
  • In Melbourne the CBD sits inside the Free Tram Zone and is the easiest first base; Fitzroy is the bohemian north, St Kilda the cheaper seaside option with a longer ride in.
  • Check-in needs a physical card in your own name matching the passport. Apple Pay, Google Pay and prepaid travel cards are overwhelmingly not accepted for the deposit.
  • Hotels block a refundable bond: 100 to 200 AUD at regular hotels, 200 to 500 AUD at five-star ones, and 1,000 to 3,000 AUD per night for luxury villas and apartments.
  • Releasing the hold takes 3 to 10 business days to a foreign account, and up to 31 days on some credit cards.

Accommodation

Choosing the right neighbourhood for the first nights after arrival hugely affects logistics and a tired traveler's acclimatization: Sydney:

  • Sydney CBD / The Rocks: the absolute city centre within walking distance of the Opera House and Circular Quay, with a direct connection to the T8 airport train. Suited to tourists who want everything at hand and no complicated commuting. Prices are very high - standard hotels start at 250+ AUD per night (checked July 2026).
  • Surry Hills: the neighbourhood immediately adjoining Central Station. Ideal for lovers of café culture, gastronomy and nightlife, with excellent transport links and an authentic feel. Mid to upper price level.
  • Bondi Junction: a great compromise for being close to iconic Bondi Beach while keeping a fast train link to the city (10 minutes to Town Hall). Mid price level.

Melbourne:

  • Melbourne CBD: ideal for the first days - free trams within the Free Tram Zone and an easy SkyBus ride from the airport. Mid price level.
  • Fitzroy: the bohemian northern quarter full of street art, bistros and independent shops. Easily reached by tram from the centre. Mid price level.
  • St Kilda: a laid-back seaside neighbourhood popular with backpackers and young travelers. Cheaper accommodation, but a longer ride to the very centre. Lower to mid price level.

Check-in practices and pre-authorization (bonds): Australian hotels apply very strict rules at check-in that cannot be bypassed:

  1. Physical card and name match: the guest must present a physical payment card in their own name exactly matching the passport presented. Hotels overwhelmingly do not accept digital cards in phones (Apple Pay, Google Pay) or prepaid travel cards for the deposit hold.
  2. Pre-authorization deposit (bond): the hotel blocks a refundable bond on the card to cover potential damage, minibar consumption or extra cleaning. At regular hotels the bond runs 100 to 200 AUD per stay. At five-star and luxury hotels (e.g. the Crown chain) it is 200 to 500 AUD for standard rooms, and for luxury villas and apartments it reaches 1,000 to 3,000 AUD per night. Cash is generally not accepted as a bond at modern hotels.
  3. Releasing the hold: the block is released after check-out and room inspection. Crediting the money back to a foreign account standardly takes 3 to 10 business days, and up to 31 days for some credit card types.
