Urban transport and apps
Sydney's Opal and Melbourne's myki networks both accept plain contactless bank cards with daily caps (Sydney 19.30 AUD weekday / 9.65 AUD weekend; Melbourne 5.70 AUD under 2026 half-price fares, free CBD trams). Key apps: Opal Travel, PTV, Emergency+, Uber/DiDi.
- Sydney's Opal takes a plain contactless bank card or phone - no physical Opal card needed. Tap on and off every time and the system works out distance, discounts and caps.
- Sydney caps at 19.30 AUD a day Monday to Thursday and 9.65 AUD Friday to Sunday, with a 50.00 AUD weekly cap and a 2.00 AUD discount for transfers within 60 minutes.
- Failing to tap off charges you the maximum fare for the line, and travelling with no valid fare is fined 200 to 550 AUD.
- Melbourne finished its contactless rollout on 26 July 2026, so trains, trams and buses all take a bank card and adults no longer need a physical myki.
- Half-price fares run until 1 January 2027: the zone 1+2 daily cap is 5.70 AUD, 4.00 AUD at weekends. Trams inside the CBD Free Tram Zone are free - do not tap there at all.
- Sydney (Opal system): all trains, metro, buses, light rail and the iconic ferries across the metropolitan region are integrated under the single Opal fare system. Foreign tourists do not need to buy a physical Opal card - just tap a regular contactless bank card (Visa, Mastercard, Amex) or a phone/watch with a registered card at the gate or reader on every boarding and alighting. The system computes the distance automatically and applies discounts and caps.
- Fare caps (2026): Monday to Thursday a traveler pays at most 19.30 AUD for the whole day. Friday to Sunday and on public holidays an exceptionally good weekend cap of 9.65 AUD per day applies. The weekly cap (Monday - Sunday) is fixed at 50.00 AUD. Transferring between modes (e.g. train → ferry) within 60 minutes automatically deducts a 2.00 AUD transfer discount. Failing to tap off results in the maximum possible fare for the line (up to 9.06 AUD on trains). The fine for traveling without a valid fare/untapped card is 200 to 550 AUD.
- Melbourne (myki system):
- Major change in 2026: Melbourne rolled out contactless bank-card payments (tap-and-go) across all public transport during 2026. The technology launched on all metropolitan train lines and regional V/Line services around May/June 2026; on 21 June 2026 contactless payments went live on all tram lines; and the final phase completed on 26 July 2026 with contactless payment on the full network of more than 2,500 myki-enabled city buses. Adult travelers no longer need physical myki cards - tap a card or phone on the marked Visa/Mastercard terminal when boarding and alighting.
- Fares and promo discounts (2026): the Victorian government approved half-price fares on all public transport statewide from 1 June 2026 to 1 January 2027. The standard daily cap for zones 1+2 thus dropped from 11.40 AUD to just 5.70 AUD (concession 2.85 AUD). On weekends and holidays the daily cap is 4.00 AUD (normally 8.00 AUD outside this government discount period).
- Free Tram Zone: all tram rides are completely free in central Melbourne (CBD and Docklands). Do not tap on or off inside the marked zone; tapping in the free zone needlessly charges a two-hour fare.
- Official transport apps for iOS/Android:
- Transport NSW Info / Opal Travel - the official journey planner, departures and payment management for Sydney.
- PTV (Public Transport Victoria) - the key app for planning train, tram and bus routes in Melbourne, including the Free Tram Zone map.
- Uber and DiDi - the official, fully licensed ride-hailing apps in both cities.
