No EHIC; insurance is essential, and the best hospitals are in Sarajevo.

  • Some countries hold bilateral healthcare agreements with Bosnia; they cover less than an EHIC.
  • Sarajevo has the main hospitals; elsewhere facilities are basic.

Everyday health

  • Tap water is safe in Sarajevo and the main towns.
  • Pharmacies (apoteka) are well stocked.
  • Ticks are present in forests - the usual precautions.
  • Air quality in Sarajevo is very poor in winter, when the valley traps smog. If you are asthmatic, this is a real consideration for a December to February visit.
