190 for police, 192 for an ambulance, 193 for fire - and the operators speak Portuguese. For anything as a tourist, the bilingual tourist police units DEAT in Rio and DEATUR in Sao Paulo are the better door.
- 190 is the patrol police, 192 the SAMU ambulance and 193 fire and rescue. Dispatchers speak Portuguese.
- For anything non-urgent as a tourist, go to a tourist police unit instead. DEAT in Leblon, Rio, is open 24 hours with bilingual officers; DEATUR has desks inside GRU arrivals.
- A stolen passport starts with a Boletim de Ocorrencia from the tourist police or a Policia Civil station. Nothing proceeds without it.
- Then get an emergency travel document from your consulate - embassies are in Brasilia, with consulates-general in Sao Paulo and Rio.
- Visit the Policia Federal desk at the airport before departure with the new document and the report, so your entry record can be reconciled. Skipping it causes problems at the gate.

If your passport is lost or stolen
