Driving in Cyprus: licence, roads and tolls

Left-hand traffic in the Mediterranean, free motorways, and no realistic alternative to a car.

• Traffic drives on the left, a legacy of British administration, which surprises visitors arriving from Greece or Turkey.
• The motorways are free - the A1 from Nicosia to Limassol, the A5 to Larnaca and the A6 to Paphos carry no toll.
• Public transport barely connects the villages, so the Troodos mountains, Akamas and the archaeological sites effectively require a car.
• The alcohol limit is 0.05 %, and enforcement is routine at weekends.
• Crossing to the north with a hire car needs the rental company's permission and separate insurance bought at the crossing point.
