What you need, by where you are coming from
- Arriving from the United States or CanadaA plug adapter, and appliances marked 100-240 V. Anything single-voltage needs a converter.
- Arriving from the UK or IrelandPlugs go straight in and the voltage matches. Nothing to pack.
- Arriving from most of continental EuropeA plug adapter is enough - the voltage is the same as at home.
- Arriving from Australia or New ZealandA plug adapter is enough - the voltage is the same as at home.
Socket types, voltage and frequency are the nominal domestic supply as published in IEC/TR 60083 and the national standards it lists.
Cypriot sockets are British Type at 240 V, unlike neighbouring Greece and Turkey.
Sockets in Cyprus are Type at 240 V, 50 Hz - the British three-pin plug, a legacy of the colonial period.
- Nothing from Greece or Turkey fits. Both neighbours use round two-pin Schuko sockets, so an island-hopping trip needs two adapters.
- British plugs fit straight in.
- 240 V sits at the top of the European band and makes no difference to a 230 V appliance.
- American 120 V-only equipment needs a converter, not just an adapter.
- Hotels usually keep adapters at reception, and supermarkets sell them for a couple of euros.
- Cyprus, Malta and Ireland are the only EU countries wired for British plugs, which is why an adapter bought for Athens is useless here.
