What you need, by where you are coming from
- Arriving from the United States or CanadaA plug adapter, and appliances marked 100-240 V. Anything single-voltage needs a converter.
- Arriving from the UK or IrelandA plug adapter is enough - the voltage is the same as at home.
- Arriving from most of continental EuropePlugs go straight in and the voltage matches. Nothing to pack.
- Arriving from Australia or New ZealandA plug adapter is enough - the voltage is the same as at home.
Socket types, voltage and frequency are the nominal domestic supply as published in IEC/TR 60083 and the national standards it lists.
Egyptian sockets are Type and at 220 V, so European plugs fit and British and American ones do not.
Sockets in Egypt are Type and at 220 V, 50 Hz - two round pins, the same shape as continental Europe.
- A Europlug fits every socket, and Schuko plugs fit the earthed ones.
- British, American and Australian plugs need an adapter.
- Older buildings and Nile cruise boats frequently have unearthed sockets, and boats sometimes run their own supply overnight at reduced voltage.
- 220 V, so American 120 V-only equipment needs a converter.
- Adapters are cheap in any hardware shop; airport and hotel shops charge several times the price.
- Sinai resorts and desert camps run on generators for part of the day, and the sockets there are the same shape with a supply that varies.
