Money, cards and ATMs in Estonia

The currency

• Estonia uses the euro and has since 2011. The kroon is long gone.

Cards, and the near-absence of cash

• Estonia is among the most cashless countries in Europe. Cards work everywhere, contactless is universal, and some places genuinely prefer not to handle notes.
• Public transport in Tallinn does not take cash at all - see the airport section.
• You can travel here without withdrawing anything. A small reserve is sensible for a rural market or a very small shop, but it will mostly sit in your pocket.

ATMs

• Always refuse the machine's offer to charge you in your own currency. Dynamic currency conversion costs several per cent and the wording makes it sound like a service.
• Use bank ATMs - LHV, Swedbank, SEB - rather than independent machines.

Tipping

• Tipping is not expected and service is not added. Rounding up or leaving up to ten per cent for good restaurant service is appreciated, never demanded.
• Prices are what is on the menu. Estonia does not run the cover-charge and service-supplement games common further south.
