How safe is Kosovo for travelers?

The north

• The Serb-majority municipalities around north Mitrovica are periodically tense, with roadblocks and occasional unrest.
• Check current advice before going, and follow it.
• The rest of the country is calm and this does not describe Pristina, Prizren or Peja.

Unexploded ordnance

• Mines and unexploded ordnance from the 1998-99 conflict remain in some border areas and mountains.
• Stay on marked paths and hard surfaces, particularly near the Albanian and Serbian borders and in the Rugova mountains.
• Do not touch any munition. Report it and leave by the way you came.

Crime

• Violent crime against visitors is rare and Kosovo is a safe country to walk around.
• Pickpocketing is at the usual low level.
• Kosovo has the youngest population in Europe and Pristina's nightlife reflects it - it is lively rather than threatening.

Roads

• Driving standards are assertive and rural roads are unlit.
