Every service has two numbers, one for landlines and one for mobiles, and they are not the same. From a mobile the one to remember is 117.
The numbers

- The mobile number is the landline number with a 1 in front. That is the whole rule, and it is the reason people misdial in an emergency.
- 117 is the one to save. It reaches both ambulance and police, and it is also the number the FCDO gives for reporting a road accident.
Other numbers worth having
- Telecoms complaints: ARTEC on 600, after complaining to the operator.
- Customs helpline: 360, free.
- Ivato airport call centre: +261 34 00 123 45, 08:00 to 20:00 daily.
Consular reality
- There is no Canadian government office in Madagascar. Canadians are covered from the High Commission in Pretoria, or the Emergency Watch and Response Centre in Ottawa.
- The FCDO publishes UK help and services in Madagascar on its own getting-help page, along with lists of English-speaking lawyers, translators and funeral directors.
- Save the numbers offline. A contact that lives in the cloud is not a contact when there is no data, and this is a country where a local SIM is a shop visit rather than a download.
