Where to stay for a first visit
- Mexico City: Roma Norte and La Condesa are the default answer - leafy, walkable, endless cafes and restaurants, and safe to walk at night. Polanco is upmarket and very secure. Juarez and Zona Rosa are central and lively. Coyoacan is quiet, historic and a long way south of everything else.
- Cancun: the Zona Hotelera for the beach strip and the resorts; El Centro downtown for a fraction of the price, real restaurants and the ADO bus station.
- Guadalajara: Colonia Americana for walkable nightlife and cafes, Zona Centro for the historic core, Providencia for a quiet upmarket base.
