Getting from the airport to the city in Mexico

• Metrobus line 4 - 30 MXN, 45 to 60 minutes. From Terminal 1 puerta 7 and Terminal 2 puerta 2, to the Centro Historico, Paseo de la Reforma and Buenavista, every 6 to 10 minutes from about 04:30 to midnight. You need a Tarjeta de Movilidad Integrada first, 15 MXN from a station machine.
• Metro line 5 - 5 MXN. Terminal Aerea station is 200 m outside Terminal 1. It is absurdly cheap and 40 to 50 minutes to the centre with a change at Pantitlan or Oceania. Large luggage is barred during peak hours (07:00 to 09:30 and 18:00 to 20:30), which rules it out for most arrivals.
• Authorised airport taxi - 250 to 450 MXN, fixed by zone. Buy the ticket at the counter inside the arrivals hall before you go out the door - operators are Porto Taxi, Nueva Imagen, Sitio 300 and Confort Taxi. 30 to 60 minutes to Roma, Condesa or Polanco.
• Uber or DiDi - 150 to 350 MXN. Pick up outside Terminal 1 puerta 4 or at ground level at Terminal 2.

The arrivals corridor at Cancun is the single most aggressive commercial gauntlet in the country.

• Ignore everyone in the exit corridor. It is known as the "Shark Tank": people in official-looking shirts posing as transport advisers, offering free shuttles and upgrades. They are timeshare sellers, and the "free shuttle" costs you a morning of your holiday. Walk straight through to the outdoor transport bays.
• ADO bus - 130 MXN to downtown Cancun, 240 MXN to Playa del Carmen. From outside Terminals 2, 3 and 4, every 20 to 30 minutes from 08:15 to 23:30. 35 minutes to the ADO station in El Centro, 65 minutes to Playa del Carmen. This is the honest option.
• Shared vans - 300 to 500 MXN per person to the Zona Hotelera, from desks past baggage claim.
• Official taxi - 800 to 1,500 MXN per vehicle on a fixed rate. The taxi syndicate at CUN is powerful and expensive.
• Uber is contested here. Drivers frequently ask you to walk off airport property to a main access road for pickup, because of ongoing conflict with the taxi unions. Fares run 300 to 600 MXN.

• Bus route 380-A - 15 to 30 MXN cash, from the arrivals curb to Central Vieja downtown, every 20 minutes from 06:00 to 21:30, 45 to 60 minutes.
• Official airport taxi - 320 to 450 MXN fixed by zone, ticket bought inside.
• Uber or DiDi - 180 to 300 MXN, 30 to 45 minutes to Colonia Americana or the Centro Historico.

Everywhere in Mexico the same rule holds: buy from the counter inside, or use the app. Anyone who approaches you first is not the deal.
