No border, no control, and your Schengen days keep counting - Monaco is entered from France without noticing.

There is no border

  • Monaco is not in the EU and not formally in Schengen, but it applies Schengen rules through a long-standing arrangement with France.
  • There is no border post and no passport check. You arrive by train or road from France and nothing happens.
  • Your Schengen 90/180 continues to run while you are here.
  • Whatever admits you to France admits you to Monaco. There is no Monegasque visa to obtain.

Practicalities

  • Carry your passport or ID card. Police checks are possible and Monaco is heavily policed.
  • Staying longer than a visit is a different matter entirely - residence in Monaco is tightly controlled and has nothing to do with tourism.
  • The one document check most visitors meet is at the Casino de Monte-Carlo, which requires photo ID and has a dress code and a minimum age of 18.
