Uzbekistan visa and entry requirements

The short version

Uzbekistan spent a decade dismantling one of the most difficult visa regimes in Asia, and the result is that most readers of this page need nothing at all.

• More than 90 nationalities enter visa-free, in almost every case for 30 days.
• Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months from the day you arrive.
• There is no arrival form, no fee and no interview. You queue, you are stamped, you leave.
• Anyone outside the list applies for an e-visa at e-visa.gov.uz, which is the only official channel: USD 20 single entry, USD 35 double, USD 50 multiple, for a 30-day stay.

The change nobody has updated

Every US citizen has been able to enter visa-free since 1 January 2026, under a decree signed on 3 November 2025.

• The old rule was age-based - free entry for over-55s and under-16s only - and it is still what most sites say, including some official ones.
• If a page tells you to buy a USD 20 e-visa as an American, it is out of date. You do not need one for a 30-day tourist visit.
• Over 30 days still requires a visa, as it does for everyone.

Where your nationality lands

Registration, and why it has a reputation

Uzbekistan requires foreigners to be registered at their address. This used to be enforced with large fines at the airport on departure, and the stories have outlived the practice.

• Hotels and guesthouses register you automatically. They take your passport at check-in, and hand back a small slip. Keep every slip until you have left the country.
• Stays of up to 3 days need no registration at all.
• Staying privately, in a homestay or a camper, means registering yourself through the Emehmon online system, at least every 3 days.
• The tourism committee has removed the traveller's own liability for a registration breach, so the airport shakedown of a few years ago is largely gone. The FCDO still describes the 3-day duty, so keep the paperwork rather than testing it.

Money and things at the border

• Cash above USD 10,000 must be declared on the way in, and you may not leave with more foreign currency than you brought.
• Precious metals and gemstones over 65 grams must be declared.
• Prescription medicines need the prescription. Codeine and several things sold over the counter at home are controlled here, and the consequences run to criminal proceedings.
• Drones are prohibited without a licence obtained in advance.
• Antiques and carpets need an export certificate, which any reputable seller will arrange. Buying a genuinely old rug without one is how people lose it at the airport.
