Accra (ACC): the meter is published, and the rank is at Car Park 5

Ghana Airports sets the metered taxi fare itself and prints it. Know the number before you reach the kerb, and remember the pool taxis alongside are negotiable rather than metered.

  • The airport sets and publishes the metered taxi tariff: GH¢ 10.00 for the first kilometre or part of it, then GH¢ 0.10 for every additional 100 metres.
  • The metered operator is Labour Enterprise Trust Co. Ltd. and its rank is at Car Park 5.
  • Pool taxis also work from Car Park 5 but their fares are negotiable, so the published tariff does not apply to them.
  • Agree any unmetered fare before you get in.
  • Car hire is at Car Park 2, with fares displayed in the arrival hall.
  • Car Park 3 is the closest for a Terminal 3 arrival if somebody is collecting you.
  • Terminal 3 is international, Terminal 2 is domestic, so a domestic connection means changing terminal.
  • Free wifi in both terminals on the network KIA FREE WIFI.
  • Lost and Found is in the arrival hall, 24 hours a day. Report a damaged or missing bag before you leave the building.
  • Port Health, for a yellow fever vaccination, is in Terminal 3, and the airport clinic is 500 metres away and open 24 hours.

The tariff, which is unusual and useful

  • Ghana Airports Company Limited publishes the metered fare itself. That is rarer than it should be, and it turns the kerb from a negotiation into a calculation.
  • GH¢ 10.00 covers the first kilometre or any part of it, and after that it is GH¢ 0.10 per 100 metres, which is GH¢ 1.00 per kilometre.
  • The concession belongs to Labour Enterprise Trust Co. Ltd. and the rank is at Car Park 5.
  • The public pool taxis are also at Car Park 5 and their fares are explicitly negotiable. They are cheaper if you know the going rate and dearer if you do not.

The rest of the kerb

  • Car hire is at Car Park 2, and the airport displays those fares in the arrival hall.
  • Car Park 3 is the convenient one for Terminal 3 arrivals, which is where you tell a friend to wait.

Terminals

  • Terminal 3 handles international flights, Terminal 2 domestic ones. They are separate buildings.
  • Customer service desks are in both, in the arrival hall and at departure check-in, staffed by people in branded Ghana Airports uniforms.
  • Free wifi is available in Terminals 2 and 3 as KIA FREE WIFI, which is enough to message a driver or a hotel before you have a Ghanaian SIM.

If a bag does not arrive

  • The Lost and Found desk is in the arrival hall and open 24 hours. Report it before you leave the airport, because that is where the process starts.
  • Checked baggage claims are handled by your airline's ground handler, and the airport publishes their numbers: Aviance on +233 544 334 024, Menzies on +233 266 027 477 and +233 307 013 571, and Swissport on +233 593 823 774 and +233 244 343 587.

Health at the airport

  • Port Health is in Terminal 3 and does yellow fever vaccination, which matters because the certificate is a condition of entry to Ghana.
  • The airport clinic is 500 metres from the terminal, open 24 hours and open to the public, with dental, physiotherapy, paediatric and gynaecology services.

Leaving

  • Check-in counters open 2 to 3 hours before departure depending on the airline, and the airport advises being there at least 2 hours ahead.
  • Self service kiosks exist but only for Kenya Airways, South African Airways and KLM passengers.
