Sangster Airport (MBJ) to Montego Bay and the resorts
Use the official taxi counter inside the terminal; JUTA and JCAL are the licensed operators.
- JUTA and JCAL are the two official taxi companies at Sangster. Book at the counter inside the terminal, not outside it.
- You agree the fare at the counter for your destination, then take a car from the official stand.
- Around USD 30 to the city centre or the Hip Strip is a common figure; resorts further out cost more.
- Do not accept a ride from anyone who approaches you. Unlicensed taxis are the standard warning in Jamaica and the airport is where they wait.
- Many resort packages include the transfer. Check before you pay - a representative with a board is usually waiting.
The official companies
- JUTA and JCAL are the licensed taxi operators at Sangster International.
- Their counters are inside the terminal. Go there, state your destination, agree the fare.
- Then take a car from the official stand outside.
- Around USD 30 into Montego Bay itself or the Hip Strip; Negril, Ocho Rios and Runaway Bay are considerably more and take an hour or two.
Do not take an unlicensed ride
- This is the standard advice for Jamaica and it applies most sharply at the airport.
- Licensed taxis have red PP plates.
- Anyone approaching you in the hall or the car park is not the official service.
- A firm, polite no and continuing to walk is normal.
Check your package first
- A great many arrivals at MBJ are on resort packages that include the transfer.
- Look for the representative with a board before you buy anything at the taxi counter.
- Shared resort shuttles serve the Negril and Ocho Rios corridors and are much cheaper per person than a private car.
Distances
- Montego Bay itself is close - fifteen minutes or so.
- Negril is about 90 minutes west.
- Ocho Rios is about 90 minutes east.
- Check where your resort actually is. "Montego Bay" in a booking often means a long drive from it.
