Getting from Luis Munoz Marin International Airport to the city

The two routes that matter

• E40, TU Pinero to Aeropuerto LMM. This is the one that connects the airport to rail. TU Pinero is a station on the Tren Urbano, San Juan's metro, so E40 plus the train reaches Bayamon, Hato Rey and Santurce. Around 230 calls a day, 05:22 to 20:27.
• D53, Terminal San Juan Covadonga to the airport. Covadonga is the bus terminal at the edge of Old San Juan, so this is the direct route to the historic centre. 267 calls, 06:29 to 20:54.

Where you catch them

• On Avenida Jose V. Caro, outside the terminals: one stop in front of the American Airlines terminal, one in front of the JetBlue terminal, and a third airport stop further along.
• Two more routes pass within a short walk, on PR-187 by the Balneario Carolina and the Marriott: T5 (Iturregui to Terminal San Juan Covadonga, 05:02 to 21:50, and by far the busiest route here) and D45 (TU Sagrado Corazon to Loiza, 05:11 to 20:42).

The evening problem

• Every one of these routes stops running between roughly 20:30 and 22:00. Flights from the mainland land later than that all the time.
• If you are arriving in the evening, plan on a taxi or a ride-hail. There is a fixed-rate taxi system from the airport, arranged at the stand in arrivals.

Where you are

• Isla Verde starts immediately east of the airport. If your hotel is there, you are minutes away and a bus is barely worth it.
• Condado is about 8 km west, Old San Juan about 12 km.
• Puerto Rico is a US territory, so there is no passport control arriving from the mainland, the currency is the dollar, and US mobile plans usually work as domestic.
