Five numbers across three services, and none of them is 112.

The numbers

Emergency numbers in Algeria
ServiceNumber
Ambulance16 or 1021
Fire14
Police17 or 1548

Before you need them

  • Save all five. Algeria publishes two numbers each for ambulance and police, and there is no single emergency number covering everything.
  • Expect the call to be in Arabic or French. Have the address of where you are written down, ideally in French.
  • Call your insurer as soon as you are referred to a clinic, since private facilities are the ones you will want and they will want to know who is paying.
  • If you are detained, insist on contacting the British Embassy. The authorities do not always inform them.
  • Save your embassy's number offline. Coverage in the south is patchy and a cloud contact list is not a saved contact.
