Driving in Andorra: the three basics

Drives on the
right

The driver sits on the left and overtakes on the left. Roundabouts turn anticlockwise.

Your licence
EU licence is enough

An EU, EEA or Swiss licence is valid as it stands. A licence from anywhere else works alongside an International Driving Permit, which hire desks and police expect to see.

Motorways
Mixed

Most roads are free and specific crossings, city zones or concession motorways charge. The catch is that several of them have no barrier and expect payment afterwards.

There is no motorway and no vignette. The one charge is the Envalira tunnel on the road to France - EUR 8.10 for a car, and free while the pass above it is closed by weather.

Andorra has no motorway and one toll - the Envalira tunnel - plus mountain passes, cheap fuel and traffic through the middle of the capital.

No motorway, one toll, and two mountain roads in and out.

  • Fuel is much cheaper than in France or Spain, which is one reason for the queues at the border on Sunday evenings.
  • Winter equipment is required in snow - winter tyres or chains - and the Port d'Envalira at 2,408 m is the highest paved pass in the Pyrenees.
  • The alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, and above 0.8 g/l it stops being a fine and becomes a crime under article 268 of the penal code - up to a year inside, a ban of up to three years and a fine of EUR 300 to 3,000. A professional driver crosses both lines at 0.5.
  • Andorra la Vella is a single congested valley road. Park in a garage and walk; the through traffic barely moves at weekends.
  • The one toll in the country is the Envalira tunnel on the CG-2 towards France: EUR 8.10 for a car since January 2026, and free while the pass above it is closed by weather. Every other road is free.
  • Neither France nor Spain charges a toll to reach the border, and the French approach over the Envalira can close in winter while the Spanish one stays open.
