Bahrain is the relaxed one in the Gulf, and the trap is the causeway: what is legal here is not legal in Saudi Arabia.
- Non-Muslim adults may bring in a limited quantity of alcohol, and it is sold legally in licensed shops and hotels - unusual for the region.
- Carrying alcohol across the King Fahd Causeway into Saudi Arabia is a serious criminal offence. The Saudi side searches vehicles, and a bottle in the boot has ended in detention.
- Pork is available in licensed sections of supermarkets and may be brought in in small personal quantities.
- Bahrain publishes no fixed cash threshold, unlike its neighbours, but customs may require you to declare currency or gold on the spot and you should be able to account for a large sum. Do not assume the Gulf-standard figure applies here.
- Medicines containing codeine or narcotics need a prescription in the original packaging.
- Material considered offensive to Islam is prohibited, and printed matter is what customs looks at.
