Drives on the
right
The driver sits on the left and overtakes on the left. Roundabouts turn anticlockwise.
Your licence
Licence plus an IDP
Your own licence works with an International Driving Permit beside it. Get the permit at home before you fly - no country issues one for another country's licence.
Motorways
Tolls by distance
Motorways charge for the distance driven, at barriers or by camera. Budget for it on a long drive; it is rarely trivial.
Montenegro's roads are slow and spectacular, the Sozina tunnel is the one toll, and the bay ferry saves an hour.
One tolled tunnel, one useful ferry, and roads that take much longer than their length.
The Sozina tunnel between Podgorica and the coast is the country's main toll and saves a long mountain climb.
The Kamenari-Lepetane ferry across the Bay of Kotor runs constantly, costs little and cuts an hour off the drive around the bay in summer.
The alcohol limit is 0.3 g/l.
The coast road in July and August is a queue. The Budva-Kotor stretch can take three times as long as the map suggests.
The mountain roads to Durmitor and the Tara canyon are narrow, unbarriered and worth doing in daylight.
