Drives on the
right

The driver sits on the left and overtakes on the left. Roundabouts turn anticlockwise.

Your licence
Licence plus an IDP

Your own licence works with an International Driving Permit beside it. Get the permit at home before you fly - no country issues one for another country's licence.

Motorways
Free

There is no motorway charge for a car.

Qatari roads are free, the speed cameras are constant, and the alcohol rule is zero without exception.

Free roads, dense camera enforcement, and zero tolerance for alcohol.

  • The alcohol limit is zero. Any reading is a criminal matter regardless of where the drink was bought.
  • Roads are free - there are no tolls anywhere in the country.
  • Speed cameras are everywhere, including average-speed sections, and the fines are large and automatic.
  • The country is small. Doha to the northern tip is an hour, to the Saudi border an hour and a half; there is very little distance to cover.
  • Roundabout discipline is poor and lane changes without signalling are the norm, which is the main practical risk.
