Graz (GRZ): take the train, not the bus
The S-Bahn station is a covered walk from the terminal and goes direct to Graz Hauptbahnhof. Bus 630 stops closer but terminates short of the centre and needs a tram change.
- The airport has its own railway station, Flughafen Graz-Feldkirchen, 300 to 500 m from the terminal along a covered, lit and signposted walkway with baggage trolleys.
- Trains run direct to Graz Hauptbahnhof and the other way to Spielfeld-Strass on the Slovenian border.
- The train also calls at Don Bosco and Puntigam, which are useful if you are not staying near the main station.
- Bus 630 stops immediately outside the terminal but only runs as far as Zentralfriedhof, where you change to tram 5 for the centre.
- The whole airport is inside fare zone 101, the same zone as the city, so no surcharge and no special airport fare.
- One hourly ticket or one 24 hour ticket covers the trip and your city travel afterwards.
- Buy bus tickets from the driver and train tickets from the machine on the platform, or in the OeBB app.
- Baggage is free. Verbundlinie says so explicitly.
- Taxis wait outside arrivals, and there is an SMS-ordered shuttle bookable from the arrivals hall.
- The line number is quoted as both S1 and S5, by sources that are all official. Read the destination on the front of the train, not the number.
The train
- Flughafen Graz-Feldkirchen station is a walk from the terminal. The airport says about 300 m; Verbundlinie says about 500 m. Either way it is a covered, lit, signposted path and there are baggage trolleys.
- Trains go one way to Graz Hauptbahnhof and the other way to Spielfeld-Strass. OeBB lists Don Bosco and Puntigam as intermediate stops on the city side, and Leibnitz and Bruck further out.
- Buy on the platform machine or in the OeBB app. There is no ticket office at the airport station.
A note on the line number
- The airport's own page and Verbundlinie call it S1. OeBB calls it S5. All three are official sources and they do not agree.
- This is a naming problem, not a routing one. The trains from this station go to Graz Hauptbahnhof. Read the destination on the departure board rather than trusting a line letter you got from a guide.
The bus
- Bus 630 stops directly outside the passenger terminal, closer than the station.
- It does not go to the city centre. It runs via Puntigam to Zentralfriedhof, where you change to tram 5 for the middle of Graz.
- Tickets are sold by the driver, which the train does not do.
Tickets
- Graz airport is inside fare zone 101, the same zone as the city itself. There is no airport surcharge.
- An hourly ticket (Stundenkarte) covers a single journey in one direction with changes; a 24 hour ticket covers the day.
- Whichever you buy is also valid on trams and buses in Graz afterwards, so if you already hold a valid city ticket you can ride to the airport on it.
- Baggage travels free.
Taxi and shuttle
- A taxi rank sits outside the arrivals hall.
- An SMS-ordered shuttle can be booked from arrivals and will take you to a home or hotel address.
