Kaohsiung (KHH): metro R4 under the terminal, and the Kenting coach
The red line station R4 is at the airport, exit 2 for domestic and exit 6 for international. Coach 9117B runs straight to Kenting.
- Kaohsiung MRT red line station R4 is the airport station. No shuttle, no walk across a car park.
- Exit 2 leads to the domestic terminal, exit 6 to the international terminal. Four other exits come up inside the airport car parks, so read the number.
- Trains run every 4 to 6 minutes at peak and no worse than every 8 off-peak.
- For the orange line, change at Formosa Boulevard (O5 and R10), which is the station with the famous stained-glass dome.
- Coach 9117B, the Kenting Airport Express, runs from the airport to Kenting via the Donggang ferry pier, which is the boat to Xiao Liuqiu.
- Routes 9117 and 9117A run Kaohsiung to Kenting and Fangliao along provincial highway 17.
- Pay the coach with EasyCard, iPass or TPASS, or buy at the Pingtung Bus counter on the international arrivals floor near door 5, or book online.
- Route 111 runs north to Tainan from the airport.
- Taxis are metered with a 50 dollar standing charge added at the airport.
The metro is the airport station
- Kaohsiung International has its own MRT station, R4, on the red line. It is underneath the airport, not a bus ride away.
- Exit 2 comes up at the domestic terminal, exit 6 at the international terminal. There are four more exits that surface inside the car parks, which catches people out, so go by exit number rather than by which staircase is nearest.
- Service is every 4 to 6 minutes at peak and no more than 8 minutes apart off peak.
- To reach the orange line, change at Formosa Boulevard, R10 and O5, the station under the Dome of Light.
The coach to Kenting leaves from the airport
- This is the useful thing about Kaohsiung. Kenting, at the southern tip of Taiwan, is the beach destination most visitors are heading for, and you do not have to go into the city first.
- 9117B is the Kenting Airport Express: Kaohsiung Zili station, then the airport, then the Donggang ferry pier, then Kenting. Donggang is where the boats to Xiao Liuqiu leave.
- 9117 and 9117A run the same corridor along provincial highway 17, to Kenting and to Fangliao respectively.
- Tickets: tap in with EasyCard, iPass or TPASS; or buy at the Pingtung Bus counter on the international arrivals level near door 5; or book online in advance.
- Route 111 runs north to Tainan city.
Taxis
- Metered, plus a 50 dollar standing charge at the airport.
- The rank at the international terminal is left out of the exit, by door 1, outside the FamilyMart. At the domestic terminal turn right, by door 3.
- Cruising taxis pick up separately: right out of the international terminal, near pillar 9.
- A child-seat taxi can be booked in advance through the airport's taxi committee on 07 8071341.
The airport
- Kaohsiung International is in Siaogang, in the south of the city, and the metro makes it feel closer than the map suggests.
- It is Taiwan's second international gateway after Taoyuan, with a domestic terminal for the outlying islands and a mostly regional international network.
- The runway is short by international standards, which is why long-haul services here are rare.
