Tainan (TNN): the H31 goes to the high speed rail as well as the city
The airport is almost in the city, and the H31 shuttle links it to both the city government and the high speed rail station every twenty to thirty minutes.
- The airport is only about 5 to 8 km from central Tainan, close enough that a taxi is a short ride.
- The H31 shuttle is the route to know. It runs THSR Tainan station to the airport to Tainan City Government, every 20 to 30 minutes.
- That means one bus covers both the high speed rail connection and the city.
- Into the city centre and Tainan railway station takes about 30 to 40 minutes depending on traffic.
- The No. 5 bus runs Chia Nan University to the airport to Yanxing, about 19 services on a weekday and 11 at weekends.
- The Red3 tourist route calls at the airport, linking Tainan Park, Guanmiao and the Chimei Museum, every 30 to 60 minutes.
- Routes 8042, 8046 and 239 also touch the airport but run only about 4 to 6 times a day each.
- Taxis wait directly outside the terminal. The ride into town is short.
- An EasyCard works on all of it and saves fumbling for change.
- THSR Tainan is not Tainan railway station. The high speed rail station is out at Guiren; the H31 connects them.
The H31, which does two jobs
- The airport publishes the H31 as a high speed rail shuttle: THSR Tainan station, Tainan Airport, Tainan City Government, at a 20 to 30 minute headway.
- That is the useful route in both directions. Landing here and going into town, it is your bus. Landing here and connecting to the high speed rail for Taipei or Kaohsiung, it is also your bus.
- Journey into the city centre and the conventional railway station is about 30 to 40 minutes.
The other routes
| Route | Runs | Frequency |
|---|---|---|
| H31 | THSR Tainan, airport, City Government | every 20 to 30 min |
| No. 5 | Chia Nan University, airport, Yanxing | about 19 weekday, 11 weekend runs |
| Red3 | Tainan Park, Guanmiao, Chimei Museum, airport | every 30 to 60 min |
| 8042 | ShinChien University, THSR Tainan, airport at weekends | about 6 a day |
| 8046 | THSR Zuoying, airport, Tainan railway station | about 5 a day |
| 239 | Cieding, airport, Tainan railway station | about 4 a day |
- The Red3 is a tourist route and it happens to serve the airport, which makes the Chimei Museum a direct ride if that is where you are headed.
- The 8046 runs from Zuoying, the Kaohsiung high speed rail station, which is an alternative if you are coming from the south.
- The four-to-six-a-day routes are not a plan. Check the timetable or take the H31.
Two Tainan stations
- Tainan railway station is in the middle of the city, on the conventional line.
- THSR Tainan is at Guiren, well outside, on the high speed line.
- Confusing the two is the standard Taiwanese travel mistake and it costs an hour. The H31 connects the airport to the high speed one; the H31 and several other routes reach the conventional one.
Taxis and cards
- Taxis wait outside the terminal and the ride into town is short by any standard.
- Get an EasyCard. It works on the buses here and on transport nationwide, and Taiwanese bus fares are otherwise an exact-change problem.
The airport
- TNN shares its runways with a Republic of China Air Force base, which limits the civil operation.
- The route map is regional: Japan, Hong Kong, Vietnam and the domestic islands, with Kaohsiung a short drive away for anything bigger.
- Tainan is the old capital and the reason to fly here: the temples, the fort, and the food, which Taiwanese people will tell you is the best in the country.
