Karachi (KHI): forget Uber and Careem, and the taxi counters cost double
Yango and InDrive are the apps that work in Pakistan now. The three official airport taxi counters charge roughly double, and the airport bus is not a real option.
- Uber and Careem do not operate in Pakistan. Uber withdrew in 2022 and Careem stopped ride-hailing on 18 July 2025. Guides that tell you to open either are out of date.
- Use Yango or InDrive, and Bykea if you are travelling light and want a motorbike. Download and register before you fly.
- Three official taxi counters sit in arrivals: White Cars, Metro Cars and Airport Taxis.
- Official taxi fares run roughly 2,500 to 4,200 rupees to Saddar, Clifton or DHA.
- App fares for the same trips run roughly 1,000 to 3,500 rupees.
- Saddar is 15 to 18 km and 30 to 50 minutes; Clifton 20 to 23 km and 45 to 70 minutes; DHA 22 to 26 km and 50 to 90 minutes.
- Peak hours are 07:00 to 09:00 and 16:00 to 19:00, when all of those times get worse.
- The red bus from the airport exists on paper and is not a practical option.
- Pay in rupees, in cash, and carry small notes. Drivers often have no change for a large bill.
- Sources disagree about buying a SIM here. One guide lists Jazz, Zong and Telenor counters in arrivals; another says foreigners cannot buy a SIM at a Pakistani airport at all. Assume you may have to do it in a city shop with your passport.
The app situation, which every other guide gets wrong
- Uber left Pakistan in 2022. Careem, which was the default for years, suspended ride-hailing in the country on 18 July 2025.
- Yango and InDrive are what people use now, with Bykea for motorbike rides. Both car apps show the fare before you confirm.
- Register on the app before you travel. Signing up needs a working phone number, which is exactly what you do not have on landing.
- Use the terminal wifi to book rather than standing outside working out how.

- Three counters in the arrivals hall: White Cars, Metro Cars and Airport Taxis. There is also a prepaid desk with fixed rates.
- The premium buys certainty rather than comfort. A counter taxi is the option that needs no phone, no data and no app account.
- Cash, in rupees, small notes. Change is a real problem here.
Distances and the traffic
- The airport is in Faisal Cantonment, roughly 15 km from the centre by one account and further by road to the southern districts.
- Saddar: 15 to 18 km, 30 to 50 minutes.
- Clifton: 20 to 23 km, 45 to 70 minutes.
- DHA: 22 to 26 km, 50 to 90 minutes.
- 07:00 to 09:00 and 16:00 to 19:00 are the peaks, and one guide's summary of them is that all bets are off.
- Staying in DHA or Clifton gives the easiest airport access, which is worth knowing when you book a hotel.
The bus
- There is a red bus service from the airport in theory. In practice it is not an option, which is the honest version rather than a route number nobody uses.
The airport
- This is Pakistan's busiest airport, handling over 12 million passengers a year.
- Three terminals: the Jinnah Terminal for international flights, a domestic terminal and a Hajj terminal.
- Allow 3 hours for an international departure. It gets busy.
Two practical warnings
- Have your destination written down, hotel name and address, and confirm it with the driver before you move. Not everyone reads a phone screen.
- Share your live location if you take an app ride. The FCDO advises against street taxis and apps in Pakistan, and Canada suggests apps in major cities; an app ride at least leaves a record of the driver and the route.
