Lahore (LHE): 15 km out, and the fog in December is the real problem
A short run into the city and taxis outside arrivals 24 hours a day. The thing to plan around is not the transport but the winter fog, which delays and cancels flights.
- The airport is on Airport Road in the Cantt area, about 15 km from central Lahore.
- The drive is 15 to 30 minutes in normal traffic, and 30 to 45 minutes to Old Lahore and the Walled City.
- Licensed taxis wait directly outside the arrivals hall, 24 hours a day. Mostly cash, and not all use a meter, so agree the price first.
- Uber and Careem no longer operate in Pakistan. Use Yango or InDrive for a car, or Bykea for a motorbike if you are travelling light.
- App fares to Old Lahore or Gulberg run roughly 600 to 1,500 rupees.
- A metro bus station serves the airport area and connects to the Lahore network for around 40 rupees, which suits light luggage and no hurry.
- Connect to the terminal wifi and book the ride before you step outside.
- Two terminals, and the second is the seasonal Hajj terminal.
- Fog in December and January, and smog from November to February, delay and cancel flights. This is the single biggest risk to a Lahore itinerary.
Getting in
- 15 km from the centre, on Airport Road in the Cantonment, with nearby DHA Lahore, Cantt and Garden Town.
- 15 to 30 minutes in normal traffic, 30 to 45 to Old Lahore and the Walled City.
- Licensed taxis are outside arrivals around the clock. Payment is mostly cash, not every cab uses a meter, so fix the number before you set off.
The apps, corrected
- Uber withdrew from Pakistan in 2022 and Careem ended ride-hailing on 18 July 2025. Any guide naming either is stale.
- Yango and InDrive are the car apps, both showing the fare upfront. Bykea is the motorbike option and the cheapest thing on the forecourt.
- Register before you travel. Sign-up needs a phone number you will not have on arrival.
- Use the terminal wifi to book, then match the vehicle, the plate and the driver's name against the app before you get in.
- Roughly 600 to 1,500 rupees covers most city destinations by app, against a higher and negotiable number from a kerbside taxi.
The bus
- A metro bus station serves the airport area, connecting into the Lahore network for about 40 rupees.
- Speedo buses run 34 routes across the city and reach the airport among other main points, at 20 to 80 rupees.
- Both are for light luggage. Combining a bus with a short taxi for the last stretch is the realistic version.
Terminals
- The Allama Iqbal Terminal handles international traffic, and there is a separate Hajj terminal used seasonally.
- Allow 3 hours for an international departure.
- Peak demand is Hajj, Eid and the winter holidays, when rides outside the terminal thin out sharply. Pre-book then.
The weather, which matters more than the transport
- Fog delays and cancels flights at Lahore in December and January. This is a well known seasonal problem, not an occasional one.
- Smog season runs November to February and slows traffic as well as flights.
- Build slack into a winter itinerary through Lahore, and do not plan a same-day onward connection you cannot afford to lose.
