Trujillo (TRU): the airport is in Huanchaco district, not in Trujillo
Ten to eleven kilometres from the colonial centre, but administratively in Huanchaco, the beach town most travellers head for. That makes the transfer question different from the usual one.
- The airport is 10 to 11 km north-west of Trujillo's historic centre, a 15 to 25 minute drive.
- It sits in the Huanchaco district, so the beach town is nearer to the airport than the city is.
- Taxis and app rides are the usual way in. Uber and Cabify both operate in Trujillo.
- Negotiate before you get in with a street taxi. There is no meter culture in Peru.
- Combis and micros, the route minibuses, are the budget option but do not run a direct airport service and are tight on luggage space.
- Buses between Trujillo and Huanchaco run from around Avenida España and cost a couple of soles.
- One terminal, split into arrivals and departures.
- Free wifi, ATMs, currency exchange, cafés, shops, a VIP lounge and a medical post.
- LATAM, Sky Airline and JetSmart fly here, essentially domestic, with Lima the dominant route.
- Arrive 2 to 3 hours before an international flight, 1.5 to 2 for a domestic one.
Where the airport actually is
- It is in the Huanchaco district of Trujillo province, on the Carretera Huanchaco, 10 to 11 km north-west of the colonial centre.
- That matters if you are heading to the beach. Huanchaco, with the reed caballitos de totora and the surf, is closer to the airport than the city is, so a Huanchaco transfer is short.
- Trujillo's historic centre is 15 to 25 minutes by taxi depending on traffic.
Getting there
- Taxis and ride-hailing are what people use. Uber and Cabify both operate here, which fixes the fare in advance.
- A street taxi is a negotiation. Agree the number before you get in; Peruvian taxis do not run meters.
- Combis and micros are the cheap option and there is no direct airport route on them. They are also tight for a suitcase.
- The Trujillo to Huanchaco run is a couple of soles by bus or combi from around Avenida España, and takes about twenty minutes. Worth knowing for the rest of your stay even if you take a taxi from the airport.
- Taxi rates around the urban part of Trujillo province are roughly by the hour, and a longer run beyond about 15 km from the centre needs a more expensive and more reliable driver.
The terminal
- One passenger terminal, divided into departures and arrivals.
- Cafés, shops, a VIP lounge, free wifi, ATMs, currency exchange, a medical post and mother and child facilities.
- A car park for short and long stays.
- 2 to 3 hours before an international flight, 1.5 to 2 for domestic.
The flights
- LATAM, Sky Airline and JetSmart carry the traffic. Lima is the route that matters and it runs many times a day.
- The international connection is Santiago de Chile, which appears and disappears with demand rather than being a fixture.
Why people come
- Chan Chan, the largest adobe city in the ancient world, and the Huacas del Sol y de la Luna are both close to Trujillo.
- Huanchaco is the surf town and the reason many people fly here rather than take the long bus up the coast.
