Costa Rica's allowances are generous and its conservation rules are strict - shells, coral and hardwood do not leave.
- The alcohol allowance is unusually generous by regional standards, several litres per adult, along with a carton of cigarettes and a value cap on other goods.
- Shells, coral, turtle products and wildlife may not be exported. Roughly a quarter of the country is protected land, and the enforcement matches.
- Plants, seeds and fresh produce are controlled in both directions; the coffee you take home should be packaged and roasted.
- Cash equivalent to USD 10,000 or more must be declared on entry and on exit.
- Drones need registration with the civil aviation authority and are barred over the national parks.
- The land borders with Nicaragua and Panama charge their own fees and run their own checks, and the Paso Canoas crossing is slow.
