SIM and eSIM: what to buy right after arrival
Every local SIM and eSIM in Malaysia requires registration against a physical passport. An authorised dealer scans your passport data page under Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission rules — which is the one step an international eSIM bought before you fly avoids.

"Unlimited" here means capped at 18 Mbps. That is comfortably enough for maps, messaging and streaming; it is not full 5G. At the same RM 60, the choice is between unlimited-but-throttled and 200 GB at full speed — for a month of normal use, 200 GB is not a limit most travellers will reach.
The ASEAN roaming is the part worth planning around. It covers Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste and Vietnam, so a multi-country trip through the region needs one SIM rather than one per border.
