Malaysia visa and entry requirements

Decision flow

1. Your passport - valid at least six months from the day you arrive.
2. Your nationality - most European passports are visa-free for up to 90 days. Some Asian nationalities, Singapore and Thailand among them, get 30.
3. The China and India exception - a temporary visa-free arrangement, 90 days and 30 days respectively, until 31 December 2026.
4. The arrival card, then at the counter a confirmed return ticket and evidence you can fund the stay.

The Malaysia Digital Arrival Card

Free, online, and the timing rule catches people out.

• You cannot submit it more than three days before you arrive. It is not a form to complete weeks ahead - do it in the three days before the flight, or on the day.
• It costs nothing. A number of copycat sites charge for it; the only place to file is the Immigration Department's own portal, .
• Exempt: Singaporean citizens, Malaysian permanent residents, diplomatic and official passport holders, Brunei General Certificate of Identity holders, Thai border-pass holders and Indonesian cross-border (PLB) document holders. Singapore permanent residents are not exempt - only citizens.
• You get a QR code to show at immigration.

The autogate, and why it will not work for you first time

Malaysia's e-gates are open to 63 nationalities, and you still cannot use them on arrival number one. The first clearance has to happen at a manual counter so an officer can check the passport and enrol your biometrics. After that, every subsequent entry - and your departure on this trip - can go through the gate.

This is the single most common misunderstanding about arriving in Malaysia, so budget for the queue on day one.

Customs

• Tobacco: no duty-free allowance whatsoever. The exemption for arriving travellers was removed, so every cigarette, all loose tobacco and all vaping products must be declared in the red channel and taxed from the first item.
• Alcohol: 1 litre, counted across wine, spirits, beer and malt liquor together - not a litre of each. The allowance only applies if you satisfy the officer you intend to stay in Malaysia at least 72 hours, so a short stopover has none: the widely repeated "72 hours outside Malaysia" is the rule for returning Malaysians, not for visitors. Pooling allowances between travellers is prohibited - you cannot combine two people's litres into one bottle.
• Other goods: up to RM 1,000 arriving by air, or RM 500 by land or sea. Tyres, tobacco and vaping products are excluded from that figure entirely.
• Cash - declare USD 10,000 or more in cash or travellers cheques, in any currency, on entry and on exit. The penalty for not declaring runs to RM 3 million and 5 years' imprisonment.

Vapes

Do not bring one. Nicotine vaping products have been squeezed out of legality in stages, and a High Court ruling on 15 May 2026 made nicotine vape sales unlawful nationwide with immediate effect. Nicotine-free devices remain regulated rather than banned, but the distinction is not one you want to be arguing at a customs desk - and vaping products have no duty-free allowance either way.

One thing to watch outside the airport

Private apartment bookings. Hosts have been reported showing fabricated occupancy confirmations and then demanding cash top-ups outside the booking platform. Pay through the platform, and keep the confirmation.
