Alcohol is confiscated at Male airport and returned when you leave, and the ban covers more than drink: pork, idols and bibles are all on the list.
- Alcohol may not be brought into the country in any quantity. Bottles are taken at Velana airport, held in bond and handed back at departure. The resorts are licensed and serve their own; what you carry never reaches them.
- Anything deemed contrary to Islam is prohibited, and the official list names idols for worship, bibles and pork products alongside alcohol.
- Buying duty-free on the way in is pointless for the same reason, and the arrivals shop knows it.
- Cash above the declarable threshold must be reported on arrival.
- Coral and shells may not be taken out. They are protected, the penalty applies to a pocketful as much as to a crate, and the resort will tell you the same thing.
- Drones need permission and are held at the airport without it.
