What you need, by where you are coming from

  • Arriving from the United States or CanadaA plug adapter, and appliances marked 100-240 V. Anything single-voltage needs a converter.
  • Arriving from the UK or IrelandPlugs go straight in and the voltage matches. Nothing to pack.
  • Arriving from most of continental EuropePlugs go straight in and the voltage matches. Nothing to pack.
  • Arriving from Australia or New ZealandA plug adapter is enough - the voltage is the same as at home.

Socket types, voltage and frequency are the nominal domestic supply as published in IEC/TR 60083 and the national standards it lists.

Maldivian resorts standardised on British Type , but older buildings in Male still hold four other socket types.

Sockets in the Maldives are Type at 230 V, 50 Hz in almost every resort, with Type , , and surviving in older buildings.

  • Resorts are British-standard. The three-pin Type socket is what a water villa has, and most resorts keep adapters at reception.
  • Male and the local islands are less consistent, with round-pin Danish, Swiss and Italian sockets left from decades of imported fittings.
  • A Europlug fits some of those older sockets but nothing in a Type room without an adapter.
  • 230 V, so American 120 V-only appliances need a converter.
  • Guesthouse islands run on diesel generators and voltage sags when the desalination plant starts.
