The dress rules are real
- Walking around bare-chested, or in swimwear away from the beach, is prohibited and is enforced with fines.
- This applies in the street, in shops and in the Casino square - not just in formal venues.
- The Casino de Monte-Carlo has a dress code and requires photo ID; trainers and shorts will not get you in after the morning.
Language and power
- French is the official language and is what everything runs in. Monegasque survives ceremonially; Italian and English are widely spoken.
- 230 V, 50 Hz, sockets type , and - as in France.
Practicalities
- Monaco is one of the most heavily surveilled and policed places in the world and street crime is close to nonexistent.
- The country is 2 km2 with about 39,000 residents.
- Photography of the Palace guard is fine; photography inside the Casino gaming rooms is not.
- Most visitors come for a day from Nice, which the train makes easy.
