Driving in Morocco: licence, roads and tolls

A modern tolled motorway spine, mountain roads that take twice as long as they look, and constant radar.

• The motorway network from Tangier to Agadir is tolled at plazas taking cash and cards, and it is the fastest way between the cities by a wide margin.
• Radar traps are everywhere on the national roads, often just after a village sign. The fine is paid on the spot and a receipt should always be requested.
• The Atlas passes are slow. Marrakesh to Merzouga is nine hours, not the five the distance suggests, and the Tizi n'Tichka is a queue behind lorries.
• Medinas are closed to cars. Park outside the walls in Fez, Marrakesh and Chefchaouen; a guarded car park with a gardien is the norm.
• Drink-driving is treated as a serious offence and alcohol is restricted outside licensed premises.
