Akureyri (AEY): the town bus is free but stops 1.5 km short
Akureyri city buses are free, but the nearest stop to the airport is Skautaholl, about 1.5 km away. The walk into town along the coast is 3 km and about half an hour.
- The airport is about 3 km south of Akureyri town centre. That is a 30 minute walk or a 5 minute drive.
- Akureyri's city buses are free of charge, which is unusual and worth knowing.
- But the nearest city stop to the terminal is Skautaholl, about 1.5 km away, reached by a pedestrian path.
- From Skautaholl the A6 line runs to the centre, roughly hourly.
- There is a proper walking path into town along the coastline, ending at Hafnarstraeti. A second route runs past the old town and below the theatre and is about the same length.
- The Airport Bus is a pre-book service tied to international flights, not a turn-up-and-ride shuttle.
- Straeto, the countryside bus network, also serves the airport, with departures to the town centre and to villages across northeast Iceland.
- Taxis usually wait at the airport and can be ordered on +354 461 1010.
- Four car hire firms operate at the terminal: Hertz, Avis, Europcar and Thrifty.

Walking is a real option
- The town centre is about 3 km from the terminal, a 30 minute walk or a 5 minute drive.
- There is a proper path. Visit Akureyri describes a walking route along the coastline between the airport and Hafnarstraeti in the centre, and a second of similar length that runs past the old town and below the theatre.
- In summer this is a pleasant arrival. In February with luggage it is not.
The free bus, and its catch

- They do not reach the terminal. The nearest stop is Skautaholl, about 1.5 km away along a pedestrian path, and from there the A6 line runs to the centre about once an hour.
- So the free bus costs you a fifteen minute walk, which for a 3 km journey may not be the trade you want.
The other services
- The Airport Bus is a pre-book service, running in connection with international flights. It is not something to rely on without arranging it.
- Straeto, the countryside network, serves the airport with departures to the town centre and to towns and villages across northeast Iceland. That is the useful one if you are heading beyond Akureyri.

What this airport is
- It is the only international airport in the north of Iceland and operates year round.
- Several daily flights to Reykjavik, plus domestic services to Vopnafjordur, Thorshofn and Grimsey, and scheduled international flights including Greenland, the UK, Switzerland and the Netherlands.
- Icelandair provides ground handling, so check-in and baggage are theirs.
