The coach is the system
Iceland's airport is far from its capital and the connection is commercial rather than municipal.

Flybus+ is usually worth it
BSI is a bus terminal, not the centre of town, and Reykjavik weather does not reward walking with a suitcase.

- In winter, wind and horizontal rain make this an easy decision.
- In summer with light luggage and a central hotel, the walk from BSI is perfectly manageable.
The luggage charges

These matter more in Iceland than almost anywhere, because a large share of arrivals carry skis, camping gear, fishing rods or a bike. Budget for it rather than discovering it at the door of the coach.
A note on the public bus
Public bus routes to Keflavik have come and gone and current information about them is contradictory. Do not build an arrival around one without checking Straeto directly on the day. The Flybus is what actually runs, every day, all year.
Hiring a car
Iceland is a country where hiring a car is often the point of the trip, and the airport is where nearly all the hire desks are. If your itinerary involves the Ring Road or the south coast, collecting at KEF rather than in Reykjavik saves the transfer entirely.
