Julius Nyerere Airport (DAR) to the city

Taxis are negotiated rather than metered; agree the price first and use an app where you can.

  • Taxis are not metered. Agree the fare before you get in, and before your luggage goes in the boot.
  • Reckon on around TZS 40,000 into the city centre, but confirm at the time - Tanzanian prices move.
  • Uber and Bolt both operate in Dar es Salaam and remove the negotiation entirely. Use them where you can.
  • Terminal 3 handles most international flights and Terminal 2 the domestic ones. They are a real distance apart - check which one you need.
  • For Zanzibar, most people fly rather than driving; the ferry goes from the port in the city, not from the airport.

The taxi is a negotiation

  • Meters are not the norm at DAR. The fare is agreed in advance.
  • Settle the price before you get in, and certainly before your bag is in the boot.
  • Around TZS 40,000 into the city centre is a common figure, but Tanzanian prices move and this is a number to confirm rather than rely on.
  • Uber and Bolt both operate and fix the price in the app - the simplest way to avoid the whole conversation.
  • Do not accept a ride offered to you inside the terminal.

The terminals

  • Terminal 3 is the newer international terminal and handles most long-haul arrivals.
  • Terminal 2 handles domestic and regional flights.
  • They are a genuine distance apart. If you are connecting from an international arrival to a domestic flight - which in Tanzania usually means a safari or Zanzibar - allow real time and expect to take a vehicle between them.

Onward to Zanzibar

This is what most visitors are actually doing.

  • Flights to Zanzibar go from Terminal 2, are short, and run frequently.
  • The ferry to Zanzibar leaves from the port in Dar es Salaam, not from the airport - so taking it means a taxi into the city first.
  • Zanzibar has its own compulsory insurance requirement on arrival - see the Tanzania guide, where it is the thing that gets people turned away at immigration.

Practicalities

  • Traffic in Dar es Salaam is heavy and a short distance can take a long time.
  • Have small notes. Change for a large one is not guaranteed.
