Faro Airport (FAO) to the city and the Algarve

The Algarve railway is the cheap way along the coast: Faro to Lagos is 3.25 EUR, and since 19 July 2026 the line runs through without a change at Faro.

  • A regional train between Lagos and Faro is 3.25 EUR, or 2.95 EUR at the 50 percent discount rate. Lagos to Albufeira is 1.55 EUR. Prices apply from 19 July 2026.
  • Since 19 July 2026 trains run direct between Vila Real de Santo Antonio and Lagos, with no change at Faro, on electric stock after the electrification works.
  • Line 16 is the airport bus, part of the Proximo municipal network rather than an airport product, running to the centre of Faro and the bus terminal.
  • Faro railway station is the connection that matters: the Algarve line runs from Lagos in the west to Vila Real de Santo Antonio in the east.
  • Albufeira, Lagos, Tavira and Faro are all on that railway, so most resorts need no coach.
  • FlixBus runs from Faro to Lisbon from about 5.99 EUR when booked ahead, checked in August 2026.
  • Coaches from the bus terminal cover the resorts the railway does not.

  • Three euros and a quarter to cross most of the Algarve is the reason to look at the train before booking a transfer, and it is why Faro works as an arrival point for the whole coast.
  • From 19 July 2026 the line runs through, Vila Real de Santo Antonio to Lagos, without changing at Faro, on electric trains after the electrification works finished. Regional services were increased at the same time, especially at peak hours.
  • Prices above apply from that date.

Getting off the airport

  • Line 16 is the airport bus, on the Proximo municipal network rather than an airport product, running into the centre of Faro and to the bus terminal.
  • It is a short ride, and the fare is a municipal one bought on board or with a card.

Onward by coach

  • FlixBus to Lisbon starts around 5.99 EUR booked ahead, with fares running up to about 13.49 EUR closer to departure, checked in August 2026 for services three weeks out.
  • Coaches from the Faro bus terminal cover the resorts the railway does not reach.

Why the railway matters here

  • Albufeira, Lagos, Tavira and Faro are all on the line, so most Algarve resorts need no coach at all.
  • The station is in central Faro, a short bus ride from the terminal.
