Lisbon Airport (LIS) to the city
The red line runs from inside the terminal on an ordinary city fare; the Aerobus was discontinued in 2026.
- The Aerobus has been discontinued. It ran from the terminal to the centre for years and a great deal of advice still names it. It is gone.
- The metro red line starts inside the terminal and charges an ordinary city fare, about EUR 1.90 - no airport supplement, which is unusual and worth appreciating.
- You need a card first. Fares load onto the reusable navegante occasional card, about EUR 0.50, bought from the machines before the gate.
- Zapping credit is cheaper still, around EUR 1.72 a journey, if you top the card up rather than buying singles.
- A 24-hour pass is about EUR 7.25 and pays for itself in four journeys - easy in a city built on trams and funiculars.
The metro
Lisbon is one of the few capitals where the airport station is inside the terminal building and the fare is simply the city fare. There is no airport supplement of the kind Madrid, Barcelona and Athens all charge.
- Red line (Linha Vermelha) from the airport, connecting to the rest of the network at Alameda (green) and Saldanha (yellow).
- About EUR 1.90 a single on a card.
- Central Lisbon is one or two changes away depending where you are staying.
The card comes first
- Fares load onto the reusable navegante occasional card, about EUR 0.50, from the machines in the terminal.
- Buy the card and the fare together. The machines walk you through it; the mistake is expecting to tap a bank card at the gate.
- "Zapping" is stored credit rather than a single ticket, at about EUR 1.72 a journey - cheaper than buying singles, and it works on the metro, buses, trams and the ferries.
- A 24-hour pass is about EUR 7.25. In Lisbon, where you will use trams and the funiculars, it is usually the right buy.
The Aerobus is gone
The airport shuttle bus that ran to the centre and Cais do Sodre was discontinued in 2026. It appears in a large amount of published advice and in a good many hotel emails. Do not go looking for its stop.
Taxis and ride-hailing
- Bolt and Uber both operate and are usually cheaper than the rank.
- The airport is inside the city, about 7 km from the centre, so no journey here is long - which is also why the metro is so easy.
