Madeira Airport (FNC) to Funchal

The Aerobus links the airport with Funchal hotels, while Horarios do Funchal and SAM run ordinary buses past the terminal on normal island fares.

  • The Aerobus is the branded airport service, running between the terminal and the Funchal hotel zone.
  • Ordinary buses also pass the airport on the Funchal to Machico corridor, at normal island fares.
  • Horarios do Funchal uses two contactless cards: the GIRO ticket and the GIRO pass.
  • You can still buy a ticket on board for urban and interurban services if you have no card.
  • The airport is at Santa Cruz, about 16 km east of Funchal along the coast.
  • A regional tariff applies to the Aerobus, separate from the urban one.

Two kinds of bus

  • The Aerobus is the airport branded coach, running into the Funchal hotel zone.
  • The ordinary buses on the Funchal to Machico and Canical corridor pass the airport and cost much less, but stop more and have less luggage space.
  • Both are worth checking before assuming the branded service is the only option.

The cards

  • Horarios do Funchal runs a contactless system with two cards: the GIRO ticket and the GIRO pass.
  • On board tickets remain available on urban and interurban services, so arriving without a card is not a problem.
  • A separate regional tariff applies to the Aerobus.

Where the airport is

  • Santa Cruz, about 16 km east of Funchal, on the famously stilted runway above the sea.
  • Machico is closer than Funchal and is served by the same road, which is worth knowing if you are staying on the east of the island.
