Getting from Hurghada International Airport to the city

There is no tariff

• Hurghada has no published airport taxi fare. This is the single most important thing to know about arriving here.
• Taxis are poorly regulated in Egypt and the meter is frequently not used at all, so the price is whatever is agreed.
• Reported figures to the city centre run from about 200 to 350 Egyptian pounds for what is a 20 minute drive.
• El Gouna, further north, is reported at 450 to 700 pounds.
• Agree the number before the bags go in the boot. Once you are moving, your negotiating position is gone.

How to know what it should cost

• Uber and Careem both work in Hurghada's central tourist zones.
• Open one before you leave the terminal and price your journey. Even if you end up taking a rank taxi, you now know the number.
• Pre booking a private transfer is the other way to fix the price, and it is what most package holidays do by default.

The buses

• Shuttle bus stops sit next to the passenger terminal, with services towards the city centre, Safaga, El Gouna, Al Quseir, Al Mahmya and Soma Bay.
• The service is infrequent and is not timed around flights.
• Do not plan on it. If one happens to be there it is worth taking; if not, waiting for the next is a poor use of an evening.
• Inside the city, local buses and microbuses cost 10 to 25 pounds, which is genuinely cheap, but they are not an airport link.

On arrival

• Most people flying into Hurghada are on a package with a transfer included. If yours is, use it; the rep will be in arrivals.
• If it is not, price the journey in an app first, then either book it there or use that figure at the rank.
